AerolineasArgentinas is the Argentina national flagship carrier. It was founded in 1950, from the merger of four existing airlines in Argentina. At that time, Argentina’s government was run by General Péron and AerolineasArgentinas’ history has been inextricably linked with Peronist governments ever since, despite many organizations holding stakes in the airline since its foundation. In 1990, the firm was acquired by Spanish holding, Iberian Airlines, but poor financial management combined with difficult conditions in the international airline industry led to severe financial difficulties. Eventually, the Spanish firm’s stake was diluted to 20%. It was subsequently taken over (majority ownership) by the Marsans Group, a privately held Argentinian holding. In 2008, however, with a populist Peronist government back in power (the Justicialista Party), AerolineasArgentinas was once more taken over by the Argentine Government as part of a greater scheme of nationalization that also took in the postal service and later, the country’s oil industry. In 2012, the firm joined the SkyTeam Alliance. It operates in over 100 destinations and employs over 11,000 people as of 2015.
