Low Cost Carrier
Average passenger rating : 0/5  Rating criteria

Aer Lingus is the Irish national flag carrier airline. Whereas once it was a symbol of Ireland at international airports, the reality is that it has probably been superseded by the upstart low-cost carrier, Ryanair, also from Ireland. Ryanair is now a minor shareholder in the company but was prevented from a complete takeover by EU Monopoly law. The airline was founded in 1936 to provided air services between Ireland and the UK. As an Island which requires international export trade to survive, an airline was considered of strategic national importance to Ireland. It has long been a loss maker for the Irish government, who are currently in negotiations with international airline conglomerate IAG about an outright sale. However, it’s not certain that the deal will go through, as several issues remain unresolved, including the Irish government’s berths at Heathrow Airport (thought to be worth over €1 billion) as well as the issue of securing Ireland’s international air traffic. Incidentally, IAG CEO Willie Walsh was once the CEO of Aer Lingus, before being dismissed by the Irish government.
